Hello! My name is Lauren Van Niel, a graduate from The Ohio State University with a degree in Journalism. Photojournalism is such an important aspect of journalism that visually aids and enhances stories and can tell a story on its own as well. It is luckily also a long time hobby of mine. I began taking photos in photography classes at Magnificat High School in Rocky River, OH and eventually moved into videography. I worked very briefly during my senior year of high school with Crain's Cleveland Business in Cleveland, and this experience really solidified my interest in working in journalism. I moved on to taking a practicum class with The Lantern in college, publishing 8 online articles and 1 print article in total as well as aiding in the production of some videos.
During my time at The Lantern my main focus was on the University District area in Columbus. Creating stories that were informative for the students and people living around one of the largest US college campuses.
With photography I have been able to venture out to farther places to capture the beauty of nature, meet with organizations who aid communities in need, and have a chance to work with some lovely models for graduation pictures in spring of 2022.
Currently, I am a graduate working towards a specific degree to do technical writing with the hope to continue working creatively through photography, videography and writing. I hope you enjoy some of my showcased work here.
